Short history of ISU

Ilia State University is a flagship higher education institution in Georgia established in 2006 as a merger of six different institutions, each having a long history and a diverse institutional profile. It comprises four Departments/Schools, each offering distinctive training in their respective direction and in-depth research opportunity in social sciences, humanities, life sciences, earth sciences, and hard sciences. These Schools offer students BA, MA and PhD programmes in various fields of sciences. The leadership remains open to innovative teaching and learning programs and supports research initiatives to finance research activities, justly occupying the top research citation index in Georgia. Moreover, Currently over 30 research institutes and laboratories are actively engaged in research and graduate teaching at ISU.

The researchers at ISU Institutes and Centers frequently publish in international peer-reviewed journals and the university’s research profile and recognition largely depends on the quality of academic staff and the research output. While our researchers make extensive use of collaborative network with foreign colleagues and foundations - mostly in the EU and the United States to receive funding for their projects, they do not depend exclusively on extramural funding. ISU allocates approximately 8 % in its annual budget for research, which is the highest budget allocation share for research compared to other public universities in Georgia. The University has a rather sophisticated internal funding system for research, coupled with assistive mechanisms and institutional structure.

An increasing number of doctoral students and young researchers speak to the high demand for scientific professions and applied research; hence the need and enhanced possibility for commercializing of the research produced at ISU institutes and laboratories.

In closing, ISU is already involved in all EU-funded programmes, including Tempus and Erasmus+ CBHE project. It was the first higher education institution from Georgia to be a successful applicant to coordinate the Tempus programme.
